Hardy’s Heroes: The War Before June 6, 1944, D-Day

$17.99 $23.75
World War II was a pivotal event in the previous century’s history. It was a war contested on a broad front between multiple adversaries. For the Allies, it was fought by soldiers from diverse backgrounds in the cause of freedom from tyranny. It is fitting that their contribution should be remembered, regardless of their rank or status. At the outbreak of war, men and women from Hardy County, West Virginia, were quick to enlist. Hardy County has a memorial wall in Moorefield commemorating those who died in several wars, of which 33 fell during World War II. This prompted Rick A. Shockey to research the circumstances of their deaths as a tribute to the individuals involved. The result is a fascinating and touching history of some of their number, which he has presented in Hardy’s Heroes: Their History of WWII – The War Before June 6, 1944, D-Day. Apart from personal biographies that give insight into their character and military service, the author outlines the origins of the war, America’s role after the Pearl Harbor attack of 1941, and the subsequent German declaration of war on America. A brief history of the establishment of Hardy County in 1786 is also included. Rick A. Shockey grew up in Moorefield, Hardy County. His book acknowledges the contribution of the servicemen involved, but also presents a concise account of the war as it developed in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific theaters of operation. It shows the courage, comradeship, and dedication of those who sacrificed their lives for a worthy cause. A brief history of their units, insignia, training camps, commanders, and operations while in the armed forces adds considerable depth to the narrative. The position of their final resting places sounds a somber note and reminds us of the stark reality of war. While all arms of the military are covered, the description of flying training and airborne operations is particularly good. Racial segregation and tensions were present, but African Americans gave exemplary service, which was not always recognized. Hardy’s Heroes is a microcosm of American involvement in World War II. It is both a history and a tribute to those who fought and died, as well as those who survived. Young lives were cut short, and families were affected. This is a meticulously researched work that is a highly personal account of those who served their country. It will delight readers who are interested in military history and is highly recommended.
